Having taught English for years, I have found that the most critical point affecting students’ progress is their understanding and usage of grammar. It is challenging for them as their patterns of expression are seriously influenced by their mother language. By addressing their obstacles, I aim to enhance and strengthen their grasp of grammar, which serves as a solid foundation for their language skills.
At its core, whatever they have learnt over the years is reflected in their ultimate goal—writing, the culmination of years of academic learning and an essential skill that benefits them well into their adulthood and extends further into their career path.
Through my teaching, I focus on addressing their weaknesses and aspire to equip students with the ability to write and to express themselves clearly, confidently, and effectively, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally as they grow.

Your Student
Dear Miss Lai,
First of all, I am very grateful for your teaching. Although I can’t learn English from you anymore, I will try my best to learn English in the future.
Then, I hope that I can study well in England and adapt to the new life easily and quickly. I also hope that I can become more mature in the UK and no longer need your worry and care.
Last but not least, I wish that you will recover soon and more and more students will be taught by you. It is a pity that they can’t learn from you, because you are a good teacher, you have changed a lot of me, not only in English level, but also in dealing with others.

Common mistakes made in students’ writing.
常 見 錯 誤
Misuse of Tenses
Students often misuse tenses in their writing by inconsistently shifting between past, present, and future without reason, leading to confusion.
For example, they might describe an event in the past but accidentally switch to the present tense midway, such as writing, “She went to the market and buys some fruits.” Another common mistake is using the wrong tense for the context, such as defaulting to the present tense whenever they do not see any time indicators, without considering the meaning or context of the situation.
This issue often arises because their native language does not involve tense distinctions. These errors disrupt the clarity and flow of their writing, making it harder for readers to follow their ideas. With practice and greater awareness, these issues can be addressed effectively.
Incorrect Use of Conjunctions
Many students misuse conjunctions by using the wrong ones for the context or placing them incorrectly within a sentence.
For instance, they might write, “She was hungry, but she ate a big meal,” where “but” contradicts the logical flow and “so” would be more appropriate. Another common mistake is overusing conjunctions, leading to run-on sentences like, “He wanted to go to the park and he had time and he was excited and…”
The mistakes mentioned above are often influenced by the tone of their mother language, which differs from English.
With consistent practice and refinement, these errors can be minimized, making sentences smoother and more coherent.
許多學生在使用連接詞時會出錯,例如在不合適的語境中選擇連接詞,或在句子中錯誤地放置它們。 舉例來說,他們可能會寫:「她很餓,但她吃了一頓大餐」,其中「但」與邏輯順序相矛盾,在這種情況下,「所以」會更合適。
這樣的錯誤通常受到母語語法的影響,而這些語言特徵與英語有所不同。 透過持續的練習和改進,這些問題可以逐步減少,使句子更加流暢且通順。
Confusion between Parts of Speech
Misuse of parts of speech occurs when students incorrectly apply grammatical elements such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs in their writing.
For example, they might write, “He happy to help,” omitting the verb “is,” or use an adjective in place of an adverb, as in “She runs quick,” instead of “She runs quickly.”
These errors stem from a limited understanding of how different parts of speech function in sentence construction, as the challenges arise from the absence of corresponding grammatical patterns in their own language
By actively studying grammar rules and practicing their application, students can refine their writing and communicate their ideas with greater clarity and precision.
